Enabling RDP on your PC

RDP is an integrated feature of Microsoft Windows (except home editions, see this FAQ entry). On all non-server editions RDP has to be enabled before it can be used. To do so, please follow the guides for your installed version of Microsoft Windows.

Windows XP

• Enabling Remote Desktop on Windows XP

  This tutorial guides you through the necessary steps to enable Remote Desktop on your Windows XP Computer.

  Please note that some Windows XP versions do NOT SUPPORT RDP out of the box.

  Navigate to system Properties

  • Click on the Windows start button.
  • Click with the right mouse button on My Computer.
  • Select "Properties".

  

  Allow Remote Desktop

  • Select the "Remote" tab at the top of the window.
  • In the "Remote Desktop" section select (check) "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer".
  • Click on "Select Remote Users...".

  

  Select Remote Desktop Users

  • Add any User you want to be able to access your Computer. Then click OK.
  • Click OK in the System Properties window.

  

• Firewall settings on Windows XP

  This tutorial guides you through the process of adding a firewall exception for Remote Desktop which might be necessary under certain circumstances.

  Please be aware that a 3rd party firewall (e.g., Symantec, Kaspersky) might also affect Remote Desktop.

  Open Control Panel

  • Click on the Windows start button.
  • Select Control Panel.

  

  Switch to Classic View

  • If the left pane shows "Switch to Classic View" then click it, otherwise please proceed to the next step.

  

  Open Firewall settings

  • Double click on Windows Firewall.

  

  Allow Remote Desktop exception

  • Select the "Exceptions" tab at the top of the window.
  • In the section Programs and Services check Remote Desktop.
  • Click OK.

  

• Setting a password for your User on Windows XP

  This tutorial guides you through the process of setting a password for your User account.

  To be able to connect to your Computer using Remote Desktop you have to have a password set for your User account. If you do not have a password set you have to create one. This also applies for any user who should be able to connect to your computer via Remote Desktop.

  Open Control Panel

  • Click on the Windows start button.
  • Select "Control Panel".

  

  Open User Accounts

  • Double click on User Accounts.

  

  Change an account.

  • Select Change an account.

  

  Select the account to change.

  • Select your User account.

  

  Create a password.

  • Select Create a password.

  

  Enter password.

  • Type your password.
  • Set a password reminder.
  • Click "Create password".

  

Windows Vista

• Enabling Remote Desktop on Windows Vista

  This tutorial guides you through the necessary steps to enable Remote Desktop on your Windows Vista Computer.

  Please note that some Windows Vista versions do NOT SUPPORT RDP out of the box.

  Navigate to system settings

  • Click on the Windows start button.
  • Click with the right mouse button on the "Computer" button.
  • Select "Properties".

  

  Select Remote settings

  • On the left pane click on Remote settings.

  

  Allow Remote Desktop

  • Select the "Remote" tab at the top of the window.
  • In the "Remote Desktop" section select the middle one. ("Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop [..]").
  • Click on Select Users.

  

  Select Users

  • Add any Users you want to be able to acces your Computer. Then click OK.

  • From the top five tabs select the Remote tab.
  • In the lower "Remote Desktop" section select the middle one. ("Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop [..]").
  • Click on Select Users.

  

  Select Users

  • Add any User you want to be able to access your Computer.
  • Click OK to finalize this step.

Connecting Mac and Linux

iTap RDP can only connect to RDP servers and thus to Windows. To connect to Mac or Linux computers please use iTap VNC client.
